This time of year, Catkins receives many calls about injured or found wildlife. While we always want to help animals, our staff do not have the permits, supplies, or training/knowledge to care for wild animals. We also do not have proper housing or space.

If you find an orphaned, injured, or abandoned animal that appears to be in need, please stop and contact a wildlife rehabilitation facility before intervening. The staff at those facilities do have the proper training and supplies to help these animals.

If you find orphaned young, please remember they are likely NOT abandoned. Mom is simply out getting her own meal so she can sustain her nursing her young. Rabbits, for example, will not go near their young unless feeding-it is a safety instinct to not draw attention to her young. If you disturb the babies when mom is gone, it could be a matter of life or death for them. If in doubt, call an expert first.

For wildlife, please call Wild Instincts based in Rhinelander, WI. It is recommended to contact the facility before handling or removing wildlife. Wild Instincts can be reached at 715-362-9453. Wild Instincts is available by phone 24 hours a day.

Another resource you can also call is Northwoods Wildlife Center in Minocqua, WI. It is recommended to contact the facility before handling or removing wildlife. Northwoods Wildlife Center can be reached at 715-356-7400.

For wild birds, please call the Raptor Education Group, Inc. based in Antigo, WI. Again, please contact the facility before handling or moving wild birds. The Raptor Education Group, Inc can be reached at 715-623-4015. Even if they can’t take the bird, they may have some input on how you should handle a situation.

If you are unsure who to contact, please call your local sheriff’s department or the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for more information.
